Assistant Sheriff Herman Lopez has been with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office for twenty-five years. Assistant Sheriff Lopez’ first assignment was in 1997 when he was assigned to the Corrections Division, Indio Jail. In April 1997, he transferred to the Patrol Division, Palm Desert Station and worked in the cities of Palm Desert, Indian Wells, Rancho Mirage and the unincorporated county areas. In 2004 Assistant Sheriff Lopez was promoted to Corporal and transferred to the Indio Station where he later promoted to Investigator. While at the Indio Station, Assistant Sheriff Lopez worked in the cities of La Quinta, Coachella and the unincorporated county areas.

In December 2006, Assistant Sheriff Lopez was promoted to rank of Sergeant and transferred to the Palm Desert Station where he worked as a patrol supervisor and the Investigations Bureau sergeant. In 2009, Assistant Sheriff Lopez was assigned to the Sheriff’s Central Homicide Unit.

In August 2012, Assistant Sheriff Lopez promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and held assignments in Corrections, Patrol and the Special Investigations Bureau. In January 2019, Assistant Sheriff Lopez was promoted to the rank of captain and commanded the Special Investigations Bureau, the Major Crimes Bureau and later the Thermal Station.

Assistant Sheriff Lopez possesses a Bachelor’s degree in Workforce Education and Development from Southern Illinois University and has lived with his family in the Coachella Valley since 1997.

On December 10, 2021, Assistant Sheriff Lopez was appointed to rank of Chief Deputy by Sheriff Chad Bianco.

On October 5, 2023, Assistant Sheriff Lopez was appointed to rank of Assistant Sheriff by Sheriff Chad Bianco and currently oversees Corrections Operations.
