Details:

On July 9, 2020, at approximately 11:00 p.m., a deputy assigned to Riverside County Sheriff’s Department S.T.R.E.E.T was travelling on Highway 60 at Heacock Street, where he observed a Ford Mustang and a Dodge Charger travelling parallel to each other. Both vehicles slowed to a matching speed, then accelerated heavily to speeds in excessive of 120 miles per hour engaging in an alleged illegal speed contest. The deputy initiated an enforcement stop on both vehicles as they exited Highway 60. While the Ford Mustang yielded to the deputy, the Dodge Charger fled from the scene at a high rate of speed.

Upon contacting the driver of the Ford Mustang, the deputy discovered it was also occupied by the driver’s wife, along with his two children aged 12 and 9. The driver, who admitted to knowingly engaging in the speed contest with the Dodge Charger, was placed under arrest for felony child endangerment and engaging in a speed contest. The area was searched for the Dodge Charger, which was not immediately located, but are actively pursuing investigative leads.

The driver of the Ford Mustang, Andrew Avila, male Hispanic, 33, resident of San Jacinto, was booked at the Robert Presley Detention Center on multiple charges related to felony child endangerment and engaging in a speed contest. The case will be referred to the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office for prosecution

Anyone with information pertaining to locations in your area where this type of illegal activity is taking place, or with any information pertaining to illegal street racing, sideshows, or planned street take overs is encouraged to contact Sergeant Dan Ponder at the Jurupa Valley Sheriff’s Station (951) 955-2600 or at Riverside Sheriff’s Dispatch (951) 776-1099.
