Details:

On Friday, July 24th, 2020, at 1:00 A.M., the Coachella Valley Violent Crime Gang Task Force assumed an investigation stemming from a traffic enforcement stop conducted by California Highway Patrol Officers on a routine patrol on 86 Expressway south of Avenue 52 in Thermal. Prior to the traffic enforcement stop, CHP Officers observed an unrestrained 2-year-old child in the rear passenger seat of the vehicle.  During the traffic enforcement stop CHP Officers located a loaded .38 caliber revolver concealed under the passenger seat.  Additionally, CHP Officers located 41 Xanax pills, 74 Oxycodone pills and evidence of narcotics sales inside the vehicle.

Gang Task Force Officers determined through their investigation that the firearm belonged to passenger, Frank Gomez, 18 of Mecca.  Gomez is a documented criminal street gang member.  Gomez was arrested and charged with Possession of a Concealed Loaded Firearm and Child Endangerment.  Gang Task Force Officers determined that the driver of the vehicle, Isaac Vargas, 20 of Indio, was in possession of the narcotics and evidence of narcotics sales located inside the vehicle.  Vargas was arrested and charged with Possession of Narcotics for Sale, Transportation of Narcotics for Sale and Child Endangerment.  A second passenger in the vehicle, Alazey Torres-Montoya, 18 of Indio, was determined to be the mother of the 2-year-old child.  She was arrested and charged with Child Endangerment.  The 2-year-old child was subsequently released to a grandparent pending a follow-up investigation by Child Protection Services.  All three suspects were booked at the John Benoit Detention Center in Indio.
