Update #2 (Wednesday, 09/25/2019):

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department is saddened to share the 13-year-old victim from Landmark Middle School was pronounced clinically dead last night as a result of injuries sustained in the attack on Monday, September 16, 2019. Rigorous medical intervention and treatment efforts at an area hospital were unsuccessful.  Preparations by Diego’s family are underway for organ donation to transform this tragedy into the gift of life for other children.

The Sheriff’s Department joins the community in mourning the loss of this young man.  The two suspects previously arrested for the assault which led to Diego’s death remain in the custody of Riverside County Juvenile Hall, facing prosecution for this assault.  Due to the age of the involved parties, no further details regarding this incident will be publicly released at this time.

Violence in the communities served by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department will not be tolerated, especially involving our youth.  Anyone with further information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact Investigator Joshua Manjarrez at 951-955-2777, assigned to the Central Homicide Unit or Investigator John Tometich at 951-486-6700, assigned to the Moreno Valley Sheriff’s Station Investigation Bureau.

Update (Tuesday, 09/17/2019):

The victim in yesterday’s assault at Landmark Middle School remains hospitalized in critical condition.  During the course of the investigation in the evening hours of September 16, 2019, two juveniles, both age 13 of Moreno Valley and students at Landmark Middle School, were arrested and booked into Riverside County Juvenile Hall. Both suspects will be charged with 245 (a)(4) PC: Assault Likely to Produce Great Bodily Injury.  No further information will be released at this time due to the age of all involved parties.

Details:

On Monday, September 16, 2019, deputies from the Moreno Valley Station were dispatched to a fight occurring on school grounds.  Upon arrival deputies learned two male juvenile students were involved in a fight.  One of the students suffered significant injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.  The victim is still being evaluated and his current condition is unknown.  Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Moreno Valley Station at (951) 486-6700
