Details:

On Friday, December 4, 2020, at approximately 7:44 PM, deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, Palm Desert Station, responded to a report of a major injury traffic collision involving a motorcycle in the area of Hwy. 111 and Thunderbird Road, Rancho Mirage. Upon the deputy’s arrival they located a 24-year-old, white male adult laying in the roadway suffering from major injuries. Emergency medical personnel arrived on scene and immediately transported the male to a local hospital for treatment.

The preliminary investigation indicates the male was riding a 2019 Yamaha motorcycle east bound on Hwy. 111 (towards Palm Desert) at a very high rate of speed. The rider lost control of the motorcycle jumping the center median and colliding with multiple objects contained within the median. The rider was ejected from the motorcycle and came to rest in the opposing lanes of traffic where uninvolved drivers stopped to assist and render aid. The motorcycle broke into multiple pieces and came to rest in the east bound lanes of Hwy. 111, where a 2003 Chevrolet collided with a portion of the destroyed motorcycle. The driver of the Chevrolet was uninjured, and the rider of the motorcycle was not struck by any vehicles. The cause of this collision is still under investigation, and it is unknown if alcohol may be a factor. The motorcycle rider was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision and is expected to survive his injuries.

This collision is still under investigation and anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact Deputy Frank Avila of the Palm Desert Station’s Traffic Team at (760) 836-1600 or call anonymously at (760) 341-STOP (7867) and reference incident #S203390063.
