On December 17, 2020, at 1:20 a.m. deputies from the San Jacinto station received several calls from citizens who reported a major injury traffic collision that involved a vehicle and a bicycle, at Esplanade and San Jacinto. The reporting parties described a man on the bicycle being struck by the vehicle, the bicyclist was trapped underneath the vehicle. When the deputies arrived, they located a man in the intersection suffering from major injuries to his legs. The man’s bicycle was located near him; the bicycle had damage that was consistent with being struck by a car. Paramedics arrived to treat the injured bicyclist and transport him to a local hospital.
The driver of the car remained on scene and cooperated with investigating deputies. It was determined the driver of the car was under the influence of drugs and alcohol. He was arrested and transported to a local jail. Charges will be pending upon completion of the investigation. The San Jacinto Stations Collision Reconstruction Team responded to the scene and assumed the investigation. They are conducting a full investigation to determine the cause of the collision. As of the time of this release, the roadway continues to remain closed for the investigation.
