Details:

On April 29, 2021 at 11:42 PM, deputies assigned to the Palm Desert Sheriff’s Station responded to a burglary call located in the 40 block of Via Las Flores, Rancho Mirage. The victim stated while in his kitchen, he noticed a male inside his residence with a flashlight. This male then ran out of the residence, entering an unknown vehicle. Patrol deputies, with the assistance of the Palm Springs Police Department located the suspect’s vehicle in the 300 block of North Indian Canyon Drive, Palm Springs. The driver of the vehicle was identified as, Teddy Kaiser Hartwell, 35 years of Palm Springs.

The Palm Desert Station Burglary Suppression Unit (BSU) responded and assumed the burglary investigation. Multiple items of stolen property were located during the search of Hartwell’s vehicle and his residence. BSU members were able link Hartwell to twelve other residential “cat” burglaries and two residential burglaries that occurred in the cities of Palm Desert and Rancho Mirage since March 30, 2021. On the “cat” burglaries, the victims were inside their residences when Hartwell entered and removed property from within the victim’s residences.

Hartwell was arrested for the numerous burglaries and was booked into the John Benoit Detention Center, in the city of Indio.

Cat burglaries garner a heightened level of concern from the law enforcement community because of the elevated level of risk for the victims. The potential for a dangerous encounter between the homeowner/victim and the suspect is significantly higher in these types of crimes. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department would like to remind you to lock your doors and windows when practical, even when you are home, to assist with keeping you and your family safe.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department is asking anyone with additional information to contact Deputy James Mills (760) 836-1600 or call anonymously at (760) 341-STOP (7867) and reference incident numbers: S210960005, S210980027, S211050012, S211050015, S211190072, S211200019, T210890010, T210890119, T210910020, T210910126, T210990017, T210990021, T211170020, T211170036, T211170057.
