Details:

On May 26, 2021, about 3:09 PM, deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, Moreno Valley Station, responded to the report of a major injury traffic collision near the intersection of Day Street and Bay Avenue, in the city of Moreno Valley. Deputies arrived on-scene to find there were two vehicles involved, a silver, 2012 Ford Edge and a white, 2014 Toyota Corolla, each only occupied by a driver. The driver of the Toyota was found to have moderate injuries and was transported to a local area hospital. However, the driver of the Ford, identified as a 17-year-old male of Winchester, was found to have sustained major injuries and was declared deceased at the scene despite life saving measure taken by deputies and CalFire personnel.

The Moreno Valley Sheriff’s Station Traffic Collision Reconstruction Team responded to the location and assumed the investigation. The preliminary investigation revealed the Toyota was traveling eastbound on Bay Avenue, approaching Day Street, at a high rate of speed. When the Toyota entered the intersection, it failed to stop for a posted stop sign and struck the Ford’s driver’s side, causing it to collide with a nearby residential fence where it came to a rest. It was initially unknown if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the collision; however, the investigation will continue.

The collision investigation required the closure of Day Street, between Brill Road and Sherman Avenue, and Bay Avenue, east and west of the intersection.

The identity of the involved parties will not be released pending further investigation and the notification to next of kin.
