On Thursday, July 29, 2021, at 12:35 P.M. the Coachella Valley Violent Crime Gang Task Force (CVVCGTF ) conducted saturation patrol in the unincorporated areas of Desert Hot Springs and Sky Valley. Gang Task Force Officers conducted a traffic enforcement stop of a vehicle near the intersection of 20th Avenue and Prospect Street in Sky Valley. Prior to the vehicle coming to a complete stop, the driver of the vehicle threw a loaded 12-Gauge Shotgun from the window of the vehicle. The shotgun was subsequently recovered by Gang Task Force Officers at which time they determined the shotgun was previously reported as stolen. The driver of the vehicle was identified as convicted felon and documented criminal street gang member, Daniel Avila, 51 of Indio. Avila was found to be in possession of suspected methamphetamine and a concealed dirk/dagger. Gang Task Force Officers arrested Avila for Violation of Parole, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Possession of a Stolen Firearm, Possession of Narcotics with a Loaded Firearm, and Possession of a Dirk/Dagger. Avila was booked at John Benoit Detention Center in Indio.
