[ARCHIVED] Unarmed Suspects of a Stolen Vehicle Flee onto a College Campus

Riverside County Sheriff's Department Press Release

Reporting Deputy: Sergeant Brandi Swan

File # ES222090005

Details:

On Thursday, July 28, 2022, about 12:04pm, members of the Riverside Auto Theft Interdiction Detail requested assistance from nearby deputies with a vehicle enforcement stop of a stolen BMW X3 in the area of Ramona Expressway and Warren Road in San Jacinto. Deputies from the Perris and Moreno Valley Stations, along with K-9 units, responded to the assist with the investigation. The driver of the stolen BMW failed to stop when deputies activated their lights and sirens and a pursuit ensued. A Riverside County Sheriff’s Department helicopter was overhead and observed the suspect vehicle traveling erratically. Ground units discontinued their pursuit and allowed the helicopter to follow the stolen vehicle from the air. The stolen BMW traveled through several streets in Moreno Valley until it collided into an embankment in the 16100 block of Lasselle Street. After the collision, both occupants of the BMW abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. The suspects ran into a building on a nearby college campus in an attempt to elude deputies, which was observed from the helicopter. Shortly thereafter, students ran out of the building on the college campus and directed responding units to the suspect’s location. Both suspects were found hiding inside the building and taken into custody without incident. No weapons were ever seen and there were no injuries to any students, community members, deputies, or suspects.

The reports of an active shooter reported on social media were false and the college campus was evacuated by Riverside Community College District Police out of an abundance of caution for students. Numerous deputies were on scene of this incident and did not hesitate to immediately run onto the college campus to isolate, contain, and apprehend the suspects. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department takes all incidents on school campuses very seriously and the protection of the community is our number one priority.
