On August 18, 2022, at 11:37 a.m., deputies from the Moreno Valley Sheriff’s Station were dispatched to a reported arson call at a grocery store in the 24500 block of Alessandro Blvd. Upon arrival, deputies saw a subject matching the suspect description fleeing on foot west of the location into a residential neighborhood. Further investigation revealed the suspect attempted to exit the store with a shopping cart full of groceries without paying. After being confronted by a store employee, the suspect doused the employee with lighter fluid, retrieved a lighter, and attempted to set the victim on fire. A Sheriff’s K-9 and bloodhound responded to assist in the search for the suspect. After an extensive search, the suspect was located in the area and taken into custody without incident.

Raul Bautista, a 31-year-old local transient, was arrested for attempted murder and robbery. He was booked at the Robert Presley Detention Center with a one million dollar bail.

The goal of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department is to improve the quality of life for those residing within the communities we serve. This is an ongoing investigation and anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact Deputy Alex Acosta of the Moreno Valley Sheriff’s Station by calling 951-486-6700.
