On October 11, 2019 at approximately 0326 hours, Hemet Police Department Communications Center received a 911 call regarding several gunshots fired in the 700 block of North Kirby Street in the city of Hemet. Officers arrived and located expended shotgun shells on Kirby Street. Hemet patrol officers were checking the area when they contacted a male subject, later identified as Jesus Rivera. Initially, Rivera failed to comply with the officer’s commands. During this time, officers saw the buttstock of a shotgun protruding out of his waistband. Rivera eventually complied and was detained without incident. The loaded shotgun, which was sawed-off to shorten the overall length, was previously reported stolen to the Hemet Police Department.
Due to Rivera’s affiliation with a local Hemet based criminal street gang, the Hemet/San Jacinto Valley Gang Task Force was contacted and Detective Sobaszek took over the investigation. Through the investigation of the patrol officers and Det. Sobaszek, they determined that Rivera discharged the shotgun and the incident was gang related.

The Hemet/San Jacinto Valley Gang Task Force has been in existence since April 2006. The Law Enforcement Agencies within “The Valley” have been working together since this time on a daily basis. The Hemet/San Jacinto Gang Task Force is comprised of members from the Hemet Police Department, Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, Riverside County Probation Department, and the California Highway Patrol. The Hemet/San Jacinto Gang Task Force operates in the Cities of Hemet, San Jacinto, and the unincorporated areas of Hemet. The law enforcement leadership within the valley meets regularly and coordinates the Hemet/San Jacinto Valley Gang Task Force activities. Since the formation of the task force, leadership has recognized the importance of working together to provide the highest level of service for the citizens within the Hemet/San Jacinto Valley.
The Riverside County Gang Task Force is a collaborative effort of several local and countywide law enforcement agencies with the goal of providing safe and secure communities free of violent crime and gang violence.
