On Thursday, December 28, 2023, at 2:28 a.m., Lake Mathews Sheriff’s Station deputies responded to the 13400 block of Barker Lane in the unincorporated area of Corona, known as Home Gardens, for a report of a shooting. The reporting party stated he heard gunshots and discovered a man lying on the ground outside his residence. When deputies arrived, they located the male victim suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
During the investigation, information was developed indicating the suspect was hiding inside the residence where the shooting had occurred. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau responded to the scene. While searching the residence, deputies encountered the murder suspect and a deputy-involved shooting occurred.
The suspect was struck by gunfire and deputies rendered medical aid until paramedics arrived. The suspect was transported to a local area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No deputies were injured during this incident.
The involved deputies will be placed on paid administrative leave according to Department policy. The investigation is ongoing, and no additional details will be released at this time.
The homicide will be investigated by the Sheriff’s Central Homicide Unit and the deputy-involved shooting will be investigated by the Riverside County Force Investigations Detail.
