On Monday, February 24, 2020, at approximately 5:10 P.M., an officer from the California Highway Patrol conducted a traffic stop on a black 2013 Volkswagen Passat on Chicago Ave., near the intersection of Ballew Way, Hemet.  While the officer was conducting his investigation, the driver, identified as 41-year-old Riverside resident Richard Stewart, drove away from the officer, knocking the officer to the ground with his vehicle.  The officer broadcasted the information to surrounding agencies.

Within minutes, a deputy from the San Jacinto Station observed the vehicle driving on Palm Ave., near Fairview Dr., Hemet and attempted to conduct a traffic stop.  A brief pursuit ensued, with the driver yielding on N. Mayflower St., near the intersection of Florida Ave., Hemet.  Stewart was arrested and booked for Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Driving Under the Influence.

The officer was treated at a local hospital for minor injuries sustained during the incident and released.
