Details:

On Saturday, June 6, 2020, deputies from the Lake Elsinore Sheriff’s Station responded to the 100 Block of Main St., in the city of Lake Elsinore, reference an unknown trouble. While deputies were responding, it was reported that a male was fighting with a female and a shop owner intervened to protect the female by firing one gunshot.  Deputies arrived and attempted to locate the suspect who had fled out the rear of the business in an unknown direction.  A Riverside County Sheriff’s helicopter (Star-9) was called to the area to assist deputies in locating the suspect.  Deputies located the suspect in the area of  Pottery St. and Adobe St., and took him into custody without incident.  The male suspect was found to have a non-life threatening gunshot wound to his abdomen.  Medical personnel responded to the location and transported him to a local hospital for treatment.

The investigation revealed that the male was seen repeatedly hitting and kicking the female inside of the business.  The business owner intervened and the male suspect left the store and returned minutes later.  The store owner had the female victim run to the back of the business to take shelter.  The male suspect pushed the business owner to the ground, located the female victim and began hitting her and kicking her, as she was lying on the floor. The male suspect armed himself with a metal object and began striking the female with it. The store owner brandished a firearm at the male to try and stop him from hitting the female.  The male turned toward the business owner to strike him with the metal object, and the business owner discharged his firearm once, which caused the male suspect to run out the back of the business.

The male suspect was identified as Vincent Benton 31 years, a resident of Lake Elsinore.  He was found to be on felony probation for a prior assault.  Benton was arrested for Domestic Violence, Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Criminal Threats and a felony probation violation.  He was transported and booked at the Cois Byrd Detention Center.

This is an on-going investigation, anyone with information is encouraged to call Deputy Verostek or Investigator Alkire at the Lake Elsinore Sheriff’s Station (951) 245-3300.
