Details:
On Saturday, April 3, 2021, around 6:25 PM, Riverside County Sheriff’s Department Deputies from the Moreno Valley Station were assisting another agency with the search of wanted suspect Juan Carlos Estrada, a 40 year old resident of Corona, who was in the Moreno Valley area. Estrada was wanted in connection with a possible kidnapping and assault with a deadly weapon which occurred earlier in the day.
The search led deputies to a home in the 16000 block of La Fortuna Lane. Multiple deputies arrived at the location and began to give verbal commands over their patrol vehicle speakers, from in front of the home, for Estrada to exit. Estrada did not exit the home. During this time, dispatch received a call from inside the home advising that Estrada was inside and possibly armed with a handgun. More verbal commands were given for the Estrada to exit.
A few moments later, Estrada exited the home running toward the deputies and their patrol cars. At that time, a deputy involved shooting occurred. Estrada was struck by the gunfire and despite lifesaving measures, he was pronounced deceased on scene.
No deputies were injured during this incident. There are no outstanding suspects and there is no threat to the public.
The involved deputies will be placed on administrative leave per Department policy. The names of the involved deputies will not be released at this time.
