On Thursday, April 15th, 2021, at 5:00 P.M. the Coachella Valley Violent Crime Gang Task Force was conducting patrol in the city of Coachella. Task Force Officers attempted to initiate a traffic enforcement stop on a vehicle at which time the driver of the vehicle refused to stop and fled at a high rate of speed evading officers. A short time later, a witness called dispatch and reported seeing the driver of the vehicle throw a rifle and a backpack out of the window as it drove past a residence in the 50000 block of Chiapas Drive in Coachella. Task Force Officers responded to the area where they located a rifle and a backpack containing .223 caliber ammunition in the roadway. A short time later another witness called dispatch and reported seeing the vehicle drive into an apartment complex located in the 84000 block of Avenue 51 in Coachella, where the driver parked the vehicle and fled on foot. Task Force Officers responded to the area and located the driver of the vehicle walking near Mecca Street and Avenue 51. The driver was taken into custody without incident. The driver was subsequently identified as convicted felon and documented criminal street gang member, Brian Rodriguez, 20 of Coachella. Rodriguez was arrested for Felony Evading, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Felon in Possession of Ammunition, and Violation of Probation. Rodriguez was later booked at John Benoit Detention Center in Indio.
