On Friday, April 30, 2021, at 9:16 AM, Colorado River Station deputies responded to a brush fire off the dirt extension of Mesa Dr. and Blythe Way, in the unincorporated area of Mesa Verde. Upon arrival, Deputies located several separate brush and structure fires ablaze. During a check of the area, deputies saw Daniel Vaca Alvarez, 30 years old of Mesa Verde, fleeing the area with a propane blowtorch in hand. After a brief foot pursuit, Alvarez was detained and arrested. Cal-Fire Arson Investigators responded to the scene and took control of the investigation.
Alvarez was booked into the Blythe Jail for multiple counts of Arson of a Structure, Forest Land or Property, Violation of Arson Statutes During a State of Emergency, and Possession of an Incendiary Device.
