On Thursday, September 29, 2022, at 4:21 PM, deputies from the Cois Byrd Detention Center were notified of an unresponsive inmate. Deputies and jail medical staff immediately assessed the inmate and initiated medical aid while waiting for paramedics. Despite life-saving actions, paramedics pronounced the inmate deceased.

Injuries were observed on the inmate. Deputies secured the area and began an investigation. Investigators from the Corrections Intelligence Bureau and Central Homicide Unit responded and assumed the investigation. The identity of the decedent is being withheld pending notification to the family.

The investigation revealed that the decedent died after an altercation with another inmate. A suspect has been identified as 30-year-old Erik Martinez. Homicide charges were added, and Martinez will remain in custody.

The investigation is ongoing, and there are no additional details to release. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department encourages anyone with information regarding the incident to contact Central Homicide Investigator Adams at (951) 955-2777.
