In November 2019, the Perris Special Enforcement Team began a fraud investigation which was prompted by a separate criminal investigation. On December 12, 2019, deputies from the Perris Station Special Enforcement Team and Gang Task Force served a search warrant at a residence located on the 1100 block of Bluestem Trail in the city of Perris.
Items recovered from the residence revealed 40-year-old Perris resident Michelle Tafoya, provided false statements and fraudulent documents to the Riverside County Housing Authority to receive financial benefits. These statements resulted in an overpayment of $10,000.00 from Section 8 Housing. Michelle Tafoya was subsequently arrested for the following charges:
- 487(i) PC (Grand Theft from Housing Authority).
- 118 PC (Perjury)
- 532a(2) PC (Providing false documents to receive financial benefits).
- 10980(a) WIC (Welfare Fraud)
The Riverside County Sheriff's Department will proactively investigate the misuse of government services and funding. Anyone with information regarding this investigation is encouraged to contact Deputy Bo Sivilay with the Special Enforcement Team at 951-210-1000.
