On January 24, 2020, deputies assigned to the city of Canyon Lake responded to a multi vehicle traffic collision on Railroad Canyon Road west of Goetz Road. The preliminary investigation revealed a vehicle traveling eastbound on Railroad Canyon Road collided with the back of a vehicle that was also traveling eastbound. One of the vehicles then crossed over the center divider and collided with a vehicle traveling westbound. Two occupants of the westbound vehicle were pronounced deceased as a result of the collision. The Perris Station Traffic Collision Reconstruction Team assumed the investigation.
On March 5, 2020, deputies arrested Jose Luis Sepulveda, age 33, of Lake Elsinore for second degree murder, DUI Alcohol causing great bodily injury, and other charges. Sepulveda was booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center where he is being held in lieu of a two-million dollar bail.
