Details:
On June 18, 2021, at 5:03 P.M., deputies assigned to the Coachella Community Action Team (CCAT), attempted to stop a black Sport Utility Vehicle for a traffic violation. The driver, later identified as documented criminal street gang member Angel Hinojosa, 40 of Coachella, failed to yield and a pursuit was authorized based on Hinojosa possibly driving under the influence. Hinojosa stopped his vehicle in the area of Cesar Chavez and 1st Street and fled from the vehicle. A deputy located Hinojosa and attempted to take him into custody; however, Hinojosa pulled away and brandished a knife. Hinojosa managed to flee into a neighborhood where a perimeter was set. Hinojosa was eventually taken into custody without further incident. It was learned Hinojosa had a felony warrant for assaulting a Peace Officer.
During the incident, Deputies attempted to detain a subject who matched Hinojosa’s description. The subject, later identified as Andrew Marroquin, 18 of Coachella, threw a loaded firearm into the rear yard of a residence when deputies approached him. Marroquin was booked at the John Benoit Detention Center (JBDC) in the city of Indio for possession of a loaded concealed firearm, Possession of a controlled substance for sale, and possession of a controlled substance while armed. Hinojosa was booked at JBDC for felony evading, Driving Under the Influence of Drugs, assault with a deadly weapon on a Peace Officer, resisting arrest, possession of methamphetamine, and his felony warrant.
