On August 10, 2022, at 6:05 P.M., patrol deputies assigned to the city of Coachella and members of the Coachella Community Action Team (CCAT), responded to a report of an armed subject in the area of Suncrest Street and Avenue 51, Coachella. CCAT members contacted Fernando Ruiz, a 38-year-old resident of Coachella, who matched the description of the armed subject. Ruiz was detained and found to be in possession of a loaded firearm and narcotics. Investigation revealed, prior to deputies’ arrival, Ruiz fired one round from the firearm. No injuries occurred and no structures were struck. Ruiz was arrested for being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, convicted felon in possession of ammunition, possession of a non-serialized handgun, possession of narcotics while armed, negligent discharge of a firearm, possession of methamphetamine, and possession of Fentanyl. Ruiz was booked at the John Benoit Detention Center in the city of Indio.
