On Sunday, December 31, 2023, at 10:25 p.m., deputies from the Perris Sheriff’s Station responded to the 1700 block of Glenview Drive, in the city of Perris after receiving multiple reports of an assault with a deadly weapon that had just occurred.

Upon arriving at the location, the deputies located a 36-year-old Hispanic male, later identified as Leo Campos, suffering from a possible gunshot wound. First aid was administered to Campos, however, he succumbed to his injury at the location.

During the course of the investigation, David Smit, a 31-year-old resident of Perris, was identified as the suspect in the incident and was arrested without incident. Smit was later booked into the Cois Byrd Detention Center for the murder.
