Riverside County Sheriff's Department Press Release

Reporting Deputy: Sergeant Robert Grmusha

File # N/A

Update:

Twenty Arrested for Driving Under the Influence (DUI) During Late Summer, Labor Day Holiday

Moreno Valley, California. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, Moreno Valley Station, arrested twenty drivers suspected of driving under the influence (DUI) during a nearly three-week period through Labor Day weekend.

The enforcement efforts were part of a national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over mobilization campaign, where additional officers were on patrol throughout the country to take suspected impaired drivers off the road.

Among those arrested, ten were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, three were arrested for driving under the influence of drugs, and one for a combination of alcohol and drugs.

In addition to patrols, the Moreno Valley Sheriff’s Station held a DUI checkpoint on Friday August 26th, 2022. A total of six DUI arrests were made at the checkpoint.

Most Californians consider drunk driving as one of their biggest traffic safety concerns, and drunk driving crashes accounted for 30 percent of all traffic deaths in the state in 2020.

First-time charges for DUI are an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, which could include a suspended license.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, Moreno Valley Station, reminds the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Marijuana, illicit drugs, even prescription and over-the-counter medications, may impair driving.

The Moreno Valley Sheriff’s Station Encourages Community to Choose a Sober Way to Travel

Moreno Valley, Calif. – As the summer travel season wraps up, Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, Moreno Valley Station, reminds drivers to be responsible and never drive under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

“Whether traveling locally or taking a longer road trip to see friends and family, please have a game plan for how to get home safely,” Deputy Andrew Galbreath said. “There is never a good excuse for driving after drinking or using drugs that impair.”

The Moreno Valley Sheriff’s Station asks residents to take the necessary precautions to protect yourself and your family by buckling up, avoiding distractions behind the wheel, following the speed limit, and not driving impaired.

To help keep our community safe, the Moreno Valley Sheriff’s Station will have additional deputies on patrol Aug. 17 through Labor Day (Sept. 5) looking for drivers suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. The additional efforts to prevent impaired driving are part of a national enforcement campaign, Driver Sober or Get Pulled Over.

In addition to patrols, the Moreno Valley Sheriff’s Station will hold a DUI Checkpoint August 26, 2022 from 9:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. at an undisclosed location within the city of Moreno Valley.

In 2020, 1,159 people were killed throughout the state in drunk driving-related crashes, which accounted for 30 percent of all traffic deaths.

While drunk driving is a significant traffic safety problem, driving while impaired is not just from alcohol. Prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications and marijuana may also impair. If you plan on drinking or taking medications with a driving warning label, let someone who is sober drive. If you see someone driving impaired, call 9-1-1.

Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
